Emergence of species and punctuated equilibrium in the Tangle Nature model of biological evolution

چکیده

We consider an individual-based model of evolution. Species emergence as segregation of the population on to discrete positions in a hyper-cubical genotype space. The model emphasises interaction between coexisting genotypes. Although the rate of the micro-dynamics, consisting of reproduction and killing of individuals is essentially constant, the macro-dynamics is punctuated. The macro-evolution consists of the creation and annihilation of con1gurations in genotype space equivalent to sequences of di2erent ecosystems. We review the de1nition of the model and results concerning distribution lifetimes of individuals, genotypes and con1gurations. We discuss the non-stationarity of the model and how this agrees with the fossil record. Finally, we describe how the model is able to produce species abundance distributions of a form qualitatively in agreement with observation on real ecosystems. c © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Testing Macroevolutionary Hypotheses with Cladistic Analysis: Evidence against Rectangular Evolution.

The properties of cladistic data sets from small monophyletic groups (6-12 species) are investigated using computer simulations of macroevolution. Two evolutionary models are simulated: gradualism and the punctuated-equilibrium hypothesis. Under the conditions of our simulations these two models of evolution make consistently different predictions about the distribution of autapomorphies among ...

Is there room for punctuated equilibrium in macroevolution?

The long-controversial theory of punctuated equilibrium (PE) asserts that speciation causes rapid evolution against a backdrop of stasis. PE is currently undergoing a resurgence driven by new developments in statistical methods. However, we argue that PE is actually a tangle of four unnecessarily conflated questions: (i) is evolution gradualistic or pulsed? (ii) does trait evolution occur mainl...

Self-Organized Criticality in the Model of Biological Evolution Describing Interaction of"Coenophilous"and"Coenophobous"Species

The modification of the model of P.Bak and K.Sneppen of the self-organized biological evolution is proposed on the basis of a formalization of the scheme of the biosphere evolution suggested by O.V.Kovalev. This scheme is regarded as one approximating the realistic model of the ecosystem evolution. The fundamental difference between ”coenophilous” species and ”coenophobous” ones in respect to t...

Review of the Ethical and Technical Principles of Working with Zebrafish as a Species of the Biological Model in Medical Science Studies

The Zebrafish is a preeminent model organism that, with its most prominent features, has expanded the boundaries of science in many disciplines. Characteristics of this small freshwater fish, with the help of biologists, showed that it has a highly comparable genetic with mammals such as mice and rats. For example, the emergence of new and efficient methods for duplicating and editing the genom...

A Simple Model for the Evolution of Evolution

A simple model of macroevolution is proposed exhibiting both the property of punctuated equilibrium and the dynamics of potentialities for different species to evolve towards increasingly higher complexity. It is based on the phenomenon of fractal evolution which has been shown to constitute a fundamental property of nonlinear discretized systems with one memoryor random-based feedback loop. Th...
